I like the way a camera sharpens my own focus and tunes me to the world — to its thousand details and shades, to small unfolding scenes, to the people passing through, and — perhaps most of all — to the light, which is always pouring. In other words: the camera makes me more attentive, and so — happier.

I work on film because film is slow. There is a delay between the seeing and the image, and in that delay there is room for chance — for the small miracle of getting back something you didn't quite know you saw. Each roll is a quiet exchange between intention and accident. I find this more honest than control.
